That was the phrase that I couldn't stop saying last night after I got home from work.
Last month I registered for my first American Sign Language (ASL) class and shortly after I happened to meet deaf person who comes into my work often. When I first met him, I knew very, very little ASL. Barely even knew the alphabet. Half the time I just had to guess what he was saying. Last week I started my class and yesterday was only my second time in class, and I have learned enough so far to carry on a decent conversation. Well who just so happens to walk into my work last night?? Yep, you guessed. My Deaf friend! Last night might have been the coolest and most exciting ten minutes I have experienced! I stood there and had a full conversation with a Deaf person - a form of communication I never even thought I would be able to do. I walked away just smiling, laughing, happy, and saying how awesome and funny Deaf people are! That conversation last night and the happiness that I felt afterwards got me even more excited for the rest of the semester as I continue to learn this language. I thought about the many things I can do by knowing ASL. Interpreting for a hearing and Deaf person's conversation, interpreting in a church service, even as far as going on a missions trip and being able to communicate with Deaf people in other countries. During high school, I took two years of Spanish, and that class for two years was by far the hardest and most frustrating class for me. For some people, Spanish is easier to learn and they enjoy it. But I was in the class as a requirement for the credits I needed and did not enjoy it. But God gave me the desire to want to learn ASL, so I took advantage of that desire, dream, and goal, when I found out it was offered at my school. I chose to take the class and I am loving every minute of it beyond what words can describe. It is a fun, expressive, and beautiful language. Not only will I learn a new language, but the culture and community that is associated with it. Do you have something that you have always wanted to learn or do?

I have had people read this blog and ask why do you blog? What makes you qualified to have a blog?
Definition of blog: a website containing a writer's or group of writer's own experiences, observations, opinions, etc. So what makes me qualified: the fact that I have experiences, stories, opinions, advice, and wisdom that I am willing to share with you. I am as qualified to blog as you are. You just have to have the desire to share them. "Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers, in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity." 1 timothy 4:12 (NLT) I am 18, which gives some people further reason to disqualify me. How would an 18-year-old have enough experiences, stories, opinions, and advice to impart wisdom into other people twice her age? But guess what? That challenges and motivates me to try harder and be better and do more and prove them wrong. If someone tells you that you can't, you say, "I can. And I will." 1 Timothy 4:12 can be turned around just a little. Don't let anyone think less of you because you are older! My mother has decided to go back to school and I am immensely excited for her! You don't always catch people in her age range in a community college, so she is challenging that stereotype and saying I can! Keep this quote in mind when you are challenged: "God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called." You are called and able to do things that you could not possibly imagine! |
This is a blog about the ups & downs of early
adulthood, God's goodness & faithfulness, & life in other countries. “Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told."
